About Hypertension
Hypertension, often called the “silent killer,” is a condition that usually causes no noticeable symptoms. Many people first learn they have high blood pressure during a health checkup or a routine visit to the doctor. When the condition becomes severe, symptoms such as headaches, stiff shoulders, palpitations, dizziness, ringing in the ears, or fatigue may appear, but these can also be caused by other factors and are not unique to hypertension.
Even without symptoms, continuously high blood pressure silently strains the blood vessels and organs, potentially leading to serious diseases.
Diagnosis of Hypertension
Hypertension is diagnosed when blood pressure measured in a clinical setting remains at or above140/90 mmHg (either value being high is sufficient).
When measured at home, hypertension is diagnosed if the systolic (upper) pressure is 135 mmHg orhigher, or the diastolic (lower) pressure is 85 mmHg or higher, for more than two consecutive weeks.
Because blood pressure fluctuates with physical condition, time of day, and stress, it is importantto measure it at nearly the same time each day (morning and evening) and evaluate it based on theaverage values.
Main Complications Caused by Hypertension
When high blood pressure persists, constant strong pressure damages and hardens the blood vessel walls, a process called arteriosclerosis. This affects organs throughout the body and leads to complications involving the brain, heart, kidneys, and eyes.
In the brain, typical complications include “cerebral infarction” (stroke due to blocked vessels) and “cerebral hemorrhage” (bleeding from ruptured vessels), which can cause sudden paralysis, speech difficulty, and even be life-threatening.
In the heart, high blood pressure can lead to “left ventricular hypertrophy” (thickening of the heart muscle), “angina” or “myocardial infarction” (heart attack) due to reduced blood flow, and in advanced stages, “heart failure.”
Hypertension also damages the kidneys, causing “chronic kidney disease (CKD),” which may progress to the point of requiring dialysis if left untreated.
In the eyes, damage to blood vessels may result in “hypertensive retinopathy,” leading to vision loss.
Thus, hypertension silently damages vital organs even without symptoms.
Early treatment and lifestyle modification are essential to prevent these complications.
