About Chlamydia trachomatis
Chlamydia trachomatis is a bacterium that causes sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly among young people.
Many infected individuals show no symptoms, which increases the risk of unknowingly transmitting the infection to others.
If left untreated, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), infertility, or ectopic pregnancy in women, and epididymitis or infertility in men. It may also result in complications such as arthritis and conjunctivitis.
Chlamydia is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
Additionally, mother-to-child transmission during childbirth has been reported.
It can also spread through contact with infected genitalia or mucous membranes, even without penetrative intercourse.
Most people infected with chlamydia are asymptomatic. When symptoms do occur, men may experience urethral discharge and pain during urination, while women may have abnormal vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain, or pain during intercourse.
Infections can occur in the urethra, rectum, and throat for men, and in the vagina, rectum, or throat for women.
Diagnosis of chlamydia is typically done using nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) or PCR tests on urine samples or swabs taken from the genitals, throat, or rectum.
These methods are highly sensitive and effective for detecting infections, including in asymptomatic individuals.
Chlamydia infections can be treated with antibiotics.
Common regimens include a 7-day course of doxycycline or a single dose of azithromycin.
It is recommended to abstain from sexual activity during treatment and for one week afterward.
It is also essential that sexual partners receive treatment at the same time to prevent reinfection.
To prevent chlamydia, it is important to use condoms properly during sexual activity.
Limiting the number of sexual partners and undergoing regular STI screenings are also effective preventive measures.
If you suspect an infection or notice symptoms, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
