Diseases that cause diarrhea symptoms in Indonesia
Many Japanese and foreign visitors to Indonesia may have experienced unexplained diarrhea at least once.
While a single occurrence may not be serious, continuous episodes can be mentally and physically exhausting. Among our patients, the most common illnesses are those accompanied by diarrhea.
The causes are diverse, ranging from food consumed at home or outside, tap water, or infections contracted from friends at children’s kindergartens or nurseries.
This wide range of possible sources makes identifying the exact cause difficult, which is one of the challenges in planning prevention strategies. On this page, we will look at diseases and infection sources associated with diarrhea.
- Acute Gastroenteritis
- This disease presents with symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Common causative viruses include rotavirus, norovirus, adenovirus, and astrovirus.
- Food Poisoning
- Infections caused by contaminated food or water. Undercooked food, untreated water, and raw vegetables are common sources. Typical causative bacteria include Salmonella, Vibrio cholerae, and Campylobacter.
For more details on “Acute Gastroenteritis,
There are “non-pathogenic E. coli” that do not cause diarrhea symptoms, such as those that are part of the normal gut flora, and pathogenic E. coli” that cause symptoms. Infection with pathogenic E. coli results in an E. coli infection (intestinal infection).
Below are the “pathogenic E. coli” seen in our clinic:
● Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC)
● Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC)
● Enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC, lt/st)
● Shiga-like toxin E. coli (STEC)
● Shigella / Enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC)
“O157,” which has also caused major issues in Japan in the past, is one type of pathogenic E. coli.
Diseases caused by parasites include amoebic dysentery, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, roundworms, and whipworms.
Typhoid fever is, strictly speaking, not included in any of the above categories but is classified as a “systemic intestinal infection caused by Salmonella.
