Although these two are often collectively referred to as “keloids,” they are fundamentally different conditions.

Types of Keloids

1. True Keloids

True keloids are scars that occur in individuals with a genetic predisposition known as a “keloid-prone” constitution. They may arise even without significant trauma and can be triggered by minor irritation or insect bites. They tend to expand beyond the original wound over time, and are characterized by persistent redness, hardness, itching, and pain. They rarely regress spontaneously.

2. Hypertrophic Scars

These scars occur after clear skin injuries such as trauma, surgery, or burns. The scar tissue becomes raised, red, and firm but remains within the original boundaries of the wound. Over time, it often flattens naturally. Symptoms may include itching or mild discomfort, but they are less severe compared to true keloids and generally respond well to treatment.

Treatment Options for Keloids

1. Conservative (Non-Surgical) Treatment

Used for early or mild keloids, this approach aims to prevent worsening using medications and physical therapies. Common methods include topical or injected corticosteroids, silicone gel sheets, taping, compression therapy, cryotherapy, and laser treatment. These therapies help alleviate redness, itching, and thickening, but complete resolution is often difficult, requiring continuous management.

2. Surgical Treatment

This involves surgically excising the raised keloid tissue. However, because the recurrence rate is high with surgery alone, it is typically combined with postoperative treatments such as radiation therapy, steroid injections, or silicone sheets. It is most suitable for localized keloids, such as those on the ears or joints. Combining surgery with conservative treatments is essential to reduce the risk of recurrence.

For Reservations and Inquiries

\\For After-Hours Matters, Please Click Here!/

            Make an appointment via Whatsapp

\\For Urgent Matters During Clinic Hours, Please Click Here!/

            +62 21 8665 6830
